Wayne RESA 2016 School Enhancement Millage

On the ballot this November is an important issue around our schools.  It is the Regional Education Enhancement Millage.  It will provide added resources for our schools.  Information can be found at www.resa.net/millage  Please take a moment to become familiar with this proposal.

School districts in Wayne County have put forth a ballot proposal on the November ballot to provide added funding for their schools.  It is a two mill request for six years and will bring in $ 7.8 million for our community at a cost of  around $15 per month to the average homeowner.  

A proposal is on the November ballot that impacts our schools. It is the Regional Enhancement Millage proposal and will generate an added $385 per student each year for our school district. Districts may use this money to maintain and lower class size; repair buildings; improve technology; and make other school program improvements.( note for person posting: add in your local district specific items you shared with us for the mailer) For more information, go to www.resa.net/millage

A recent state study on school funding concluded that the state is underfunding schools, particularly students at-risk and English language learners.  In Wayne County, we have more students living in poverty and eligible for food aid than most counties in our state.  And the English Language learner population has grown from 20,000 students to 30,000 students in just five years.  Passage of this proposal will help us in our efforts to help our students be successful by meeting their needs.   For more information, go to www.resa.net/millage

Wayne County school district funding levels have declined as enrollments have declined from 261,000 to 210,000 from 2009 to 2014.  The Citizens Research Council, a nonpartisan policy organization completed a study showing school districts lose disproportionate funding when facing enrollment decline, impacting their budgets. School districts have brought this forward after years of budget challenges due to school funding limitations (state study supports schools are underfunded in Michigan) and after implementing several cost saving actions. School districts are sensitive to local requests, but feel the voters should choose if they would like to provide needed resources to provide a quality education.  It comes from a real sense of purpose and conviction that our children deserve this, and the future of our communities and the quality of life for our citizens depends on a well educated populace. .
